Business Head Shots are critical for your business image and here are some tips to get a fantastic head shot.
Since your business head shot is a representation of You, go with your regular style. Hair should be clean, neat, and styled. Come directly from the salon if your session doesn’t include a stylist. Resist the urge to try that cute new style you saw in a magazine immediately prior to your head shot, just in case you don’t like the cut. For make- up, natural is best. Avoid dramatic colors, toners, bronzers, sunburns, spray tans, and highlighters. Remember the camera “sees” differently than the human eye and things like spray tans photograph poorly and are very hard to correct. A hot new make up trend is using bronzer or highlighter to add some shimmer to your cheek bones. Unfortunately these products come across looking sweaty or greasy in camera so they should be avoided. A light natural pallet with a bit of powder to dull shine works best. Blemishes should not get any special treatment, they are easy to remove in post production, but a heavy (bad) make up job is not.
Business attire is the key to your image. If you are selling kayaks, cargo shorts and a Hawaiian shirt might be appropriate. If you are the head of a bank, suit and tie fit the bill. Regardless of your clothing, neat and pressed are a must. Ironed and lint free are the basic minimum. As to colors and patterns, Plain colors and larger patterns photograph best. Small herring bone, pin stripes, and zig zag patterns can display poorly over the web on your customers monitors.
Colors to avoid if you are light skinned, are bright shiny white materials, pale yellow, and magenta/pink as these colors will wash out your skin tones. If you have darker skin tones, bright shiny white materials, shiny black materials, muted green colors, and magenta/pink should be avoided.
* for the bright white and shiny black materials, its the shiny characteristic of the material that can cause the camera problems, regular black or white is fine*
Another great tip is to plan ahead and have your clothes professionally cleaned and pressed for your photography session.
Bring several clothing options and colors and we will help you pick the combinations that look best on you!
Bring some accessories to go with your main outfit. A jacket or sport coat is a great second look for guys. Scarves, shawls, jackets, or wraps are great second looks for the ladies. Let me be honest here, if you are planning on wearing a sleeveless dress, armpits don’t look right in business photos so bring that jacket or scarf to accessorize and help cover those areas.
Finally, know what your business head shots are going to be used for. LinkedIn profile? Website? Print? Social Media? Tell your photographer what your needs are so your files can be formatted to your end use. If you try and use a Face Book sized file for a billboard advertisement, you will not be happy with the results. We can format your images to the end use so its drag and drop simple to use your awesome new business head shots.
